I made a website to allow people to stream movies online, is it legal or not? tell me what steps i should take if not.

Hi fellow students and teachers Thanks for having the time to answer my question. Listen i made an awesome website where people can stream movies online. It consists of 9 webpages for now and the designing is superb. I wanted to host it but my university teachers told me that its illegal to let people stream online movies without taking permission. Is this true? where should i take permission from?

This forum is probably not the best place to find reliable legal advice. That being said, your university teachers are almost certainly correct.

I see on your profile page that you're located in Sri Lanka. I can't speak to the laws there, but hosting movies which you do not own the rights to is certainly illegal in the United States. I would imagine the laws are similar in most countries.

I would strongly discourage taking your site online without consulting with a legal professional first.

If you have computer skills, why stream copyrighted content(in United States) when you can create you own content. Between using open source software and the free three year perk for Maya Lt from Treehouse.com you could do better.
