I need a simple explanation of global functions within JavaScript, please?

Can someone please offer a simple explanation of global functions within JavaScript?

var GlobalVariable;
function iRock() {
    var myScopeVariable = 'foo'
}

Basically a global variable can be used by any function, method or anything in the file. While a variable inside a function only exist within it's scope or curly braces as you can imagine.
