If we want to add a background image to the li item, like specified in the video, then why select the a element in css?

Since Nick specifies we gonna add a background image to the list item - intuitively we should select as follows: .contact-info li.phone { } but instead Nick selects : .contact-info li.phone a { } which actually selects and applys a background image to the anchor element right? I just wanna realize for logical reasons so i can put it to rest : )
