  var echo = test + ' another ';

They are asking you to create a new variable outside of the function:

function returnValue (test) {
  return test;
}

var echo = returnValue("Hello");

Thanks Samuel - I almost had it. The language on the challenge was a tad confusing. Thanks for your help!

No problem! Sometimes it's difficult to figure out what exactly they are asking you to do.
