I'm having trouble with updating my Mac's console

I'm trying to update my mac's console but I'm having trouble. In the course the command is sudo apt-get update

every time I try to run this command my computer tells me that the command does not exist. Is there a different set of commands used for macs. I was under the assumption that they also ran on Ubuntu
