I'm making a website for a client, should I use her domain or just use a practice domain here?

My client has a doman name chosen but not purchased. Would this be a good chance to start building her website?

Hi Andria,

It's always a good time to start building a website, but don't spend any time on graphics, logo, etc that has to do with the actual name of the website or business until they purchase their domain name and you know that they're going to have you do the job. If you spend 2 hours coming up with graphics, menu items and urls, logos, etc for Mimi Taylor's Bakery only to find out that that domain name and business name are taken and she has to use Taylor's Baked Goods, then you have to throw your work away and start any of that design/wording work over.

But as far as just starting to block out and plan a site before they get their domain name; -sure, it's never too early to start on a site for a client with a practice domain name once you're sure that you get the job.

Andria, I'm guessing this is a Wordpress website. If that's the case, you might check out Local Wordpress Development.

It depends on the setup you have. If you already have "test" domain that you use for things, or a local web server like MAMP or WAMP, you could use that. However, you could also get her actual domain setup so you know how the real website will appear. The only HUGE WARNING I have about doing this is that she might not pay you, and if the site is already on her domain... there's nothing you can do if she changes the password info. She'll get the free site, and you'll get screwed. Hope that helps.
