Design Wants vs. Needs

In the case of the iPhone/Smart phone illustration of an "unknown need"

Would this be a situation where a product is fulfilling a need people didn't know they had or a product manufacturing a need?

Essentially, what a product can do is make it seem like it is needed when in fact there was no need for it per se.

Kind of how a drug can make people feel like there is a psychological or even physical "need" for that drug that wasn't there prior to the consuming of said drug and the user experiencing the effects of it.

I think that's a pretty good take on the concept. Here's another one: Perhaps you've heard the phrase "What did we do before iPads" when talking about keeping toddlers busy.
