what am i doing wrong with my code varl[5] has a 't' index and it is also a string

You misread the variable name, the variable should be named "var1" (var and the number 1), not "varl" (var and the letter l).

Changing the name like this:

var1 ='kenneth' 

Will allow you to pass the first task.
