inserting an include() command to pull data from another file

This is the task: I have placed another file on the server named "flavor.php" that contains this information. Before the echo statement below, add a PHP command to include that file.

I have tried to insert the following code: <?php
include("inc/flavor.php") ?>

But it doesn't work, yet the course has so far shown me this is the way it should be done. If the path isn't specified, how do i find the path?

output.php
<?php
include("inc/flavor.php");
echo "Hal's favorite flavor of ice cream is ____.";

?>

If the path isn't specified, assume the files are in the same folder, so the path would be the file name: "flavor.php".

Thank you
