Is Express a middleware in itself?

Since the syntax showed by Andrew is the one we have, eg. 

app.use(express.json());
app.use(express.urlencoded({ extended: false }));
app.use(cookieParser());

the variable express is together with 'use'. Does it mean that the whole Express is a middleware?
