Is slicing still relevant

I've been trying to improve the quality of my images on retina and higher resolution devices but it seems as if slicing & save or web is holding me back. Other photoshop plugins seem to be very similar as well i was wondering if following what Nick does in make your own website is suitable where you size the images twice as big rather than slicing different images of different displays which seems to be the suggestion all around the internet
