Is there a way to sum ranges of cells - instead of entire rows or individual cells?

On the last exercise, I was using the filter function to eliminate certain categories in the data, but when I went to use the sum function, it would incorporate all of the hidden cells data. The only work around I found was to copy that individual data to another part of the spreadsheet and sum it separately. Thanks!
