Is this acceptable?

I'm about to finish my first unit of codeing with html, and my profile photo is 408kb. I just wanted to know if that was ok?

That's not bad, particularly if it's the only image on the page, But moderate compression should be able to reduce the image size to under 200K without a visible loss of quality.
