I can't speak for Treehouse but I did have a similar need in one of my projects. For me I found looking through WordPress to be very helpful as it is an Open Source PHP and MySQL. There are also several other open source projects out there that can give you some user authentication. I would also LOVE to see a Treehouse User Auth. course. Good luck.
