Issue Accessing phpMyAdmin

I was following this tutorial and realized that I was unable to access phpMyAdmin in my MAMP WebStart Page... I'm assuming this is because I do not already have php installed on my machine - but I figured if I needed it, this would be mentioned in the tutorial.

So then I tried installing php myself, but I find their documentation very confusing. Any advice for getting this going so I can set up a local environment asap would be great.
