Issues with changing the password

Hi, I want to create a new mysql connection, and it tells me to change my password with ALERT_USER. I've looked after several solutions on how to do it, but I always get various errors, for example: Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' Could someone show me the whole process of changing the password please? (BTW: I'm running on Mac OS 10) Thank you
