Item vs NewItem Confusion

Hi all! I'm really confused why we use newItem in some places and item in others. I don't understand the difference between the two. Why do we switch off using one and then the other? Why do we use both in the addToList function?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

Best to give some context i don't think there are any methods named item or newItem unless the tutor named 2 variables newitem and item is trying to clarify the difference between both variables
