Just wondering how the size of images are really small, around 50kb

I checked the the image resources in the res folder. I noticed that they were tiny in size. I was wondering how such high quality images have such low sizes. Are they vector images?

I am asking this because when I tried making my own app while using pictures that were 1mb in size, the app lagged
