Making a list, list_1 = [apples,bananas,pears] it says apples is not defined. If i do numbers it works. why?

I'm curious why I am unable to add words to a list.

lists.py
list_1 = [apples,bananas,pears]

You'll need to surround each word with quotes so the interpreter knows it's a string and not a variable:

list_1 = ["apples", "bananas", "pears"]
