You can't have a directory and an ordinary file of the same name in the same directory. You can:

  • use a different name for your new directory (mkdir newdirname)
  • rename the file (mv filename newfilename), then do the mkdir
  • move the file to another directory (mv filename path/anotherdirectory/), then do the mkdir
  • move your point of reference to another directory (cd path/anotherdirectory/), then do the mkdir there
