multiple sites in the htdocs

I was wondering. If I want to create multiple websites and check them locally what is the best way to store them? Does it work out to create multiple folders in htdocs representing different websites? Any answers are much appreciated.

I store all of mine in subfolders. Then the site is localhost/subfolder
