Need help with conjugate_is

Not sure what I am missing here. I am passing in num_elf in the same way as for pluralize. That should give me a number for conjugate_is. What am I overlooking?

code_challenges/templatetags/fairy_extras.py
from django import template

register = template.Library()

@register.simple_tag
def conjugate_is(number):
    if number == 1:
        return 'is'
    return 'are'
code_challenges/templates/code_challenges/list.html
{% load fairy_extras %}

There {{ num_elf|conjugate_is }} {{ num_elf }} el{{ num_elf|pluralize:"f,ves" }}.
