I'm Ryan Mouser, the Content & Community Marketing Specialist here at Treehouse. My pronouns are he/him. I was 15 years old when I started learning to code in PHP for a popular text-based MMORPG game. I've been with Treehouse for over 2 years now and have had the amazing opportunity to wear many different hats. I've been learning with Treehouse since 2015 (you can check out my previous profile here).
Currently, I'm working alongside our world-class team on some exciting opportunities to bring the Treehouse Community closer together. Stay tuned! 😀

For the longest time I've had the wrong perceptions on math. I had a math phobia. In the past I dislike math only because I had poor self image in my own abilities to master mathematics and I didn't have the motivation or support from my peers to enable me to be confident in mastering it.
Now my perception has changed. I like that doing math problems creates new neural pathways and expands cognitive capabilities in the brain.
I love the learning process and find joy in the challenge of it.

I'm just a bit concerned as to why after a year from doing the PHP Techdegree you haven't been able to find an entry-level position. All I ever hear is how great it is too get into the field and how jobs are everywhere, but it would be good to hear more from someone that has gone trough a course like the Techdegree.

PHP Development Techdegree Graduate 48,635 PointsTechnically yes, but I don't get paid enough to live comfortably. I still rely on my mom and SSI for rent money and other costs. Also, I haven't gotten new tasks in a while, but I will be getting them in next week or so. And, it's hard to find an entry-level position when many of the 'entry-level' positions require like 2, 4, 5, or even 8 or more years of experience (I only have about a year of experience). Actually I responded to a recruiter about a week ago, but after I bombed the last interview, I lost the job.

I am sticking with the Techdegree in Python and will see where it will lead me. I have seen some ridiculous job postings requiring years of experience great then the age of the programing language. I think the best thing to do is submit as many applications as possible regardless. Thanks a lot for your honest respond!

I started my coding journey about 6 months ago. Started learning HTML and CSS with FreeCodeCamp, then found TreeHouse and really enjoyed this platform more. I'm currently refreshing on old HTML/CSS concepts I missed (FCC is a bit outdated) and have started learning JavaScript as well. I've been guiding myself on this self-learning journey, and as a total newbie it's been a challenge kind of knowing how to navigate in this world I knew nothing about a year ago! However, I know learning any new skill is a process and takes a lot of time, and I actually really enjoy learning about code (I'm almost 30 and never thought I would be interested in this field. Life is full of surprises!) I have a list of simple first-time projects I would like to begin (dice game, quiz/survey, user information form) but I don't really feel equipped with the knowledge necessary to complete those projects just yet. I know it will take some time to build up my confidence, and that's ok. Right now I'm just trying to stay curious and positive, asks lots of questions, and code SOMETHING for at least 30 minutes a day (#100daysofcode !!!).
My long-term goal is to work with blockchain technology. I find the concepts of the blockchain so fascinating and love learning more about it! Other interests are: crypto, investing, MMA (my husband is a pro fighter!), and Arab culture. I actually started learning Arabic about 2 years ago and that's what inspired me to start learning a programming language. I can't decide which is harder.... lol

9,964 PointsWow! Your story is awesome! I've never met an MMA fighter before, that's a tough job! HTML and CSS is tough but it's fun to learn because you can see your work real-time. It sounds like you have a solid plan and some days are going to be super frustrating but stick with it and be patient with yourself. You'll get there! Good luck!

I first dabbled in HTML when I was playing Neopets in elementary school. I wouldn't say I learned comprehensively or anything, but I learned how to make userlookups - mainly Lord of the Rings themed ones :) I did some more learning last year and really enjoyed it. My hobbies include running, messing with my cat, and a looot of TV since the pandemic hit and I have been staying inside more. Right now I'm going through Parks and Rec, 2019 Bakeoff, and Haikyuu.

I'd left a job at Verizon Wireless after 13 years to do something different and needed to build some skills so I joined a boot camp and used edx.org to gain some skills. I have been on and off progressing my skills. recently got back on here and signed up for the Python Techdegree. Currently not working on a specific project. Just reviewing my python skills so I can start the first unit project in the Techdegree. I have many interest such as aviation, astronomy, Legos, Geocaching, bird watching... I can go on.. I think I am a bit of a scared brain. Most recently, I have been going back to my indoor climbing gym. It had been nearly a year since coming back due to the pandemic.
