Not sure how to insert response into the span tag

I'm not sure if I'm using the text() method correctly.

weather.js
$(document).ready(function() {
  var weatherAPI = 'http://api.openweathermap.org/data/2.5/weather';
  var data = {
    q : "Portland,OR",
    units : "metric"
  };
  function showWeather(weatherReport){

      $('#temperature').text()=weatherReport.main.temp;

});
index.html
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
  <meta charset="utf-8">
  <title>What's the Weather Like?</title>
  <script src="jquery.js"></script>
  <script src="weather.js"></script>
</head>
<body>
  <div id="main">
    <h1>Current temperature: <span id="temperature"></span>&deg;</h1>
  </div>
</body>
</html>

Just in general, you can't assign a value to the result of calling a function. That's a syntax error.

And to assign a value using the jQuery ".text" method, you pass the value to it as an argument.
