Ok I believe the issue is converting the random_num as an index into its corresponding letter in the last line.

I believe the last line is where Im having trouble

item.py 
import random
def random_item(treehouse):
  random_num= random.randint(0,len(random_item)-1)
  return random_item[random_num]





# EXAMPLE
# random_item("Treehouse")
# The randomly selected number is 4.
# The return value would be "h"

You need to apply len() to the iterable treehouse. Also you need to return the iterable at random_num:

# EXAMPLE
# random_item("Treehouse")
# The randomly selected number is 4.
# The return value would be "h"
import random
def random_item(treehouse):
  random_num= random.randint(0,len(treehouse)-1)
  return treehouse[random_num]
