Photoshop

I'm new to the world of coding and my goal is to become proficient in front-end development and be comfortable with design at the least. Is Photoshop a tool I will need?

I use Photoshop a lot. Even with the idea of "designing in the browser", there are always times when a quick mock in Photoshop is faster and a better option.

With that said, you don't HAVE to use Photoshop. It's all preference. I would try downloading it to see if you like it.

Also check out this article. It really hits home that you can use other tools. The Happy Cog team always has good articles.

Even if prototyping in the browser 100% of the time, if you're doing front-end development there is no way you're going to get around editing images that are going to be used on the site as well as any other graphics that are not easily created in code. Like stone said, maybe not photoshop specifically but some image editing program is required.

well, its nice to have. There are free alternatives out there (gimp is pretty popular) but I prefer photoshop over gimp. It is expensive but if you attend a university your school might have it available for free download.

Great feedback. Thanks everyone! I'll check out Happy Cog and try out Photoshop and some other image editing software before buying.
