PHP not being read

I am doing the Shirts 4 Mike tutorial and i converted my file to a .php file using text mate. The browser is reading the <?php?> block as string in the title part. How do I get the browser to read php.

Sorry. I had both an index.php and index.html file in the htdocs folder. The system probably got confused so I deleted index.html and not it works.
