I'd have two comments:

  1. Maybe you already know this, but Option + Click is for Mac computers only. On Windows, you can use Alt + Click
  2. When editing the mask, the gradient tool didn't work for me. I could edit the mask with paintbrush tool though, so I could derive my conclusions about how the concept of masking works.
