Programming a background image

In completing code for backgrd image, I am using this:

UIImage *backgroundImage = [UIImage imageNamed:@"background"]; UIImageView *imageView = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithImage:backgroundImage]; [self.view insertSubview:imageView atIndex:0];

and the error is "undeclared identifier 'self' " in line 3

can anyone spot the error? thx

you dont need to add the imageView as a subview

UIImage *backgroundImage = [UIImage imageNamed:@"background"];
UIImageView *imageView = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithImage:backgroundImage];
