python basics try and except challenge task 3 of 3

I tried to do this question, and came out confused. Please help.

trial.py
def add(num1, num2):
    num1 = float(num1)
    num2 = float(num2)
    return num1+num2

    try:
        num1 = float(num1)
        num2 = float(num2)
    except ValueError:
        #if we can't, we return None
        return None
    else:

        return num1+num2
