Seeing your code will help alot in answering this question, but I anticipate a parenthesis was deleted at some point OR we'd simply forgotten to remove a slash, causing the code to escape the parenthesis. One point where I anticipate this happening most easily is when changing this code:

print(re.search(r'\(\d\d\d\) \d\d\d-\d\d\d\d', data))

to this code:

print(re.search(r'\(\d{3}\)?-?\s?\d{3}\-\d{4}', data))
