Resume Functionality Now in Videos

If you're like us, you've been interrupted while watching a Treehouse video. Perhaps your cat just wouldn't stop meowing or you had to run and pop some popcorn... Well good news! Treehouse videos now support resuming videos where you left off. No more leaving browser tabs open to remember your place.

For now, this functionality is only available in our web app, but you can expect it to make its way into our iPad and Android apps shortly.

We hope you're as stoked as we are about this small, but helpful feature. We live but to serve!

Thats great! My mum always gets lost and spend some minutes finding her way to get back on the right video on the right time .

But the only frustrating thing is when you press pause button and you click on the video e.g. on his face while paused, it goes back to 00:00 , thats frustrating .

That's nice. I also noticed what Aurelian says which is frustrating sometimes. When you click on the video after you have paused it it goes back to 0:00 instead of resuming from the place you had paused. So I always have to remember to click play instead of the video screen, to resume a video I paused.

Also , if we look on other popular sites like YT or Lynda for example , we have (people) the use to click on the video to get it going again or to pause. On TTH is only different . I like the speed button what other don't have and i think is a good bonus .

YouTube has the speed up functionality in some videos. I like the transcript, CC, downloads section, speed up is my favorite from the options Treehouse has, but the volume scroll doesn't seem to be too sensitive, I don't see very evident changes when I use it. It would also be nice if we could somehow determine the size of the video screen if we could drag it(or its container and it the video player would re-size according to the dimensions of its container) and give it the dimensions we want, but I don't know if such thing is possible. I have never seen it done anywhere so far. The 0:00 thing might be normal, it's just something that someone that uses YouTube or some other video players might not be used to.

Yes thats true about volume . The sensitive is very low in my opinion . It rather works as loud or not loud . The CC is great too i love it swell.

The resizing video i think is a good idea but i never sav it too. Im using iMac 27 Inches and the video is small so what i do is i zoom it so much that it transforms on tablet screen and it fits my half screen( i think on tablet the width is set to 100%) ish and the other side is my code area .

Yeah haha low is like loud XD

lol xD

Johnny Thunder, I noticed this new feature today! Love it. However, one thing that has happened every since I remember watching videos at Treehouse, is how if I pause a video sometimes, it immediately starts back at the beginning after resuming. I've made a habit of always keeping an eye on the video progress just in case I lost my place. But has anyone noticed this? It doesn't happen every time, but most times. It's usually after the video has been paused for more than about a minute maybe less.

Hi Dustin. Sometimes it does that while refreshing but usually starts on the spot I clicked stop. Also as we said earlier, if you click the screen to "resume" the video. It won't resume it, it will instead start from the beginning. So, to resume you always have to click "play".

Dustin Matlock thanks so much for the heads-up! I'll look into the issue immediately.

not sure , but as i see , its fixed  huraa thank you Johnny Thunder :D didnt had wait too long to get things better in treehouse after i joined :D the only thing i would look for also is when you have like code challenges, i think that the question would be good on position fixed so users dont need to scrol up all the time and see whats the question asking .

althought it still goes to the start after waiting like one minute . but at least it doesnt go back when clicking the video

Looks like the issue has been fixed. Works perfect now, thanks!

to me the video still go back after waiting a minute. Or less.

Johnny Thunder, I can confirm video is still restarting, though, not as much. This was after about two minutes of being paused. It also doesn't happen every time, only on some occasions.

Video Restarting

I don't think that issue was ever resolved. At least for me it never did. The thing is, when you click the screen after pausing the video. It doesn't resume, it always goes back to 0:00. That was never changed. It would have been better if they can set it up to resume instead. That's what most people are used to. If you had not clicked the screen but instead clicked the play button, that would have never happened.

Gloria, that's correct. In my experience, it happens when clicking the window instead of the controls. Small issue, right? I suppose it takes getting into the habit of clicking the controls, so it doesn't happen. Nevertheless, I'm sure they'll get this resolved.

Yes. But sometimes happens to click the screen , watching a 12 minute video and then searching where i was ;d

Also i noticed another bug that when you get a very small tablet , or at least resize the screen and zoom it so it has dimensions like small tablet i guess, the bar ( pausing and where is time and other stuff. Disaperas. Also when watching a trailer , i have to wait like depends 5-30 sec so the nav bar appears , thats very annoying .

I don't think it is an actually "issue", but it is a functionality many people are not used to. Especially if you use things like YouTube. There are many video players that act that certain way (when you click the screen it pauses/plays from the spot you are at), so this feels unnatural.

I understand what you're trying to say. Those are good points . If I'm not mistaken, I think YouTube does this sometimes as well. It could have something to do with the way the server fetches the video and keeps it available to the user. I'm no expert on this — just a guess.

You'll never guess what I just did.. literally seconds after writing this.. Yes, I clicked the window! :scream:

Ha ha, I am not sure what type of window you are talking about. This has disoriented me XD

Well, i guess we need to get used to it . There are people that have been learning like that for around three years :D Maybe treehouse decide to change it once xd or maybe its a new hit that will dominate the entire internet and everything will change ;p

The problem is that sometimes when you try to click the button , you miss it by like 5 pixels  sometimes .

Apparently, others are experiencing this issue with the MediaElement.js player. Maybe it's not entirely a Treehouse issue.

The issue is officially fixed guys :D I noticed it right now.

Yes! Same here :) , they put now that it goes back like 2.5 sec when you click it :p at least its good now

Dustin Matlock is correct in that it is, in fact, a MediaElement.js issue. We've updated our videos to use the latest version, which has alleviated the issue for the most part. However, this is currently still an active issue that we're working to completely fix.

Thanks to you all for your input and patience!

Johnny Thunder, are video controls intended to fade off the video, or no?

I noticed you can no longer skip through the video, you have to watch it all the way through for it to show completed.
