Retrieving RecyclerView state

If i have to retrieve the state of a RecyclerView with the method onRestoreInstanceState(), it is correct to create a new adapter and set it to the RecyclerView? Because with mRecyclerView.getAdapter().notifyDataSetChanged(); Is not working in this scenario.
