How do I add a return statement in a new variable?

I believe what you're trying to do is assign the returned value of the getYear() function to the yearToday variable.
The way that you want to do that is:

function getYear (){
  var year = new Date().getFullYear();
  return year;
}

var yearToday = getYear();
