This should work:

<div class="status">
<% if user_signed_in? %>
  <span class="message">You are signed in.</span>
<% else %>
  <span class="message">You are NOT signed in.</span>
<% end %>
</div>

Thank you my good sir. I'm now officially taking a break from Ruby for awhile and learning PHP for a bit. I'm not quitting, just taking a break.
