Sanitising phone numbers PHP

Hello,

I have a form that receives a users phone number. As the data is stored as a string should I sanitise it using FILTER_SANITIZE_STRING. Or would it be best to somehow change the data into a number and sanitise it as a number using FILTER_SANITIZE_NUMBER_INT. I am a little confused by this what should I do?

Thanks
