the getSupportActionBar

im having trouble with an error in my MainActivity class and its displaying an error on getSupportActionBar . the error message reads "cannot resolve the getSupportActionBar()"

here is my code:

// Set up the action bar. final ActionBar actionBar = getSupportActionBar(); actionBar.setNavigationMode(ActionBar.NAVIGATION_MODE_TABS);

please help

Have you extended you Activity with ActionBarActivity ?

i have tried that, and it solves the problems, but some people have said it will cause problems later in the project, let me do that, thanx
