Trouble following Illustrator Foundations video instructions for Pen Tools

I completely lose track of what to do at 6:48 in the video. I understand how to create the first two Bezier pen points, but after he says to use "Alt" to create a point without the Bezier curve, I am totally lost. I know where the "Alt" key is and I understand what's supposed to happen, but each time I try to do it the circle ends up changing shape instead of the shape we are creating. Thoughts?

Personally I use the shift key all the time for this instead of alt. This shift key is automatically inputted for this type of use. You may have to custom change this command in edit > key commands > shortcuts. Hope this helps!
