JavaScript Interactive Web Pages with JavaScript Selecting Elements and Adding Events with JavaScript Selecting Elements

Trying to complete this excercise. Not sure what's wrong with my code.

The exercise calls for selecting the second SPAN element on the page (html) and assigning to the variable lastName. I keep getting an error. Below is my code. Help is appreciated. Thanks.

var lastName = document.getElementsByTagName("h1")[1];

var fullName = document.getElementById("full_name");
var lastName = document.getElementsByTagName("h1")[1];
<!DOCTYPE html>
<h1 id="full_name"><span class="first_name">Andrew</span> <span class="last_name">Chalkley</span></h1>

<script src="app.js"></script>
