Trying to reinstall a new local Wordpress environment, but Mamp won't now start - 'port 8888 is in use'

I'm revisiting the Wordpress basics course after a break of some months. I found I couldn't remember how to get into Wordpress on my computer. I'm following the 'Wordpress basics'/'Installing Wordpress locally'. I deleted the old database so that I could follow the course in setting it up again. I deleted the localwp database (but not the user) and reinstalled Mamp. It is giving me the message when I try to launch Mamp 'Apache couldn't be started because port 8888 is in use by some other software' When I use network utility/port scan for 'localhost', I see that the port 8888 is being used by ddi-tcp-1 and 8889 by ddi-tcp-2. Can anyone tell me how to set this right? I guess I haven't uninstalled properly? Thank you so much in advance Diane (Mac osx)
