url rewriting with slugs instead of id numbers

I have just gone through the url rewriting videos for the t-shirt shop which is great for if you want to change shirt.php?id=108 but what if you want the url to display a slug instead of the id?

So, instead of:

mysite.com/shirts/shirt.php?id=108

you want something like:

mysite.com/shirts/red-shirt

How do you do this?

Thanks
