Using %n in System.out.printf

Can anyone explain me why Craig used "...%s%n..." on System.out.printf? is "\n" same as "%n" ? if no, what's rule of using them "%n" or "\n" ?

\n is the correct newline character for Unix-based systems, other systems may use different characters to represent the end of a line.

%n is portable between various platforms
