Why do i have to add the [1] at the end of my 2nd variable?

Treehouse Moderator 32,305 PointsFirst up, it should be document.getElementsByClassName('last_name') OR document.getElementsByTagName('span'), depending on whether you want to select the elements based on the class attribute or the type of HTML tag, respectively.
Second, the [1] indicates that you want the second item in the list (it's zero-indexed, or starts with zero), normally an array, but in this case it's a HTMLCollection.

8,512 PointsThe [1] at the end of the second variable is because the interpreter is treating the two spans first_name and last_name like array elements and using bracket notation to access them.
