var fullName = getElementById('full_name'); is not working - am I misreading the question?

It's not letting me pass this section. Why is it not working?

app.js
var fullName = getElementById('full_name');
var lastName;
index.html
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head></head>
<body>
<h1 id="full_name"><span class="first_name">Andrew</span> <span class="last_name">Chalkley</span></h1>

<script src="app.js"></script>
</body>
</html>

Hi Dana, the problem is browser don't know what you are selecting or using the method. First you have to select the document and then access it's method.

var fullName = document.getElementById('full_name');
var lastName;

You basically got it right! However it should be "document.getElementById("full_name");" Hope that helps!

var fullName = document.getElementById("full_name"); var lastName = document.getElementByTagName("span")[1];
