Wat is what is xlink:href?

After googling on it I couldn't find an explanation in plain English. Can someone explain this a bit please?

Don't worry, now you don't need to think about it anymore. It was solved with SVG 2.

According to MDN, now you can simply use the href attribute.

This is another excellent reading (and reference to abide by), although it's a little more lengthy. :)
