What am I missing? The array index is correct, is there a syntax error that I am not seeing?

I Believe that I am implementing the code correctly, but I think a second pair of eyes can maybe catch what I'm missing.

you need to assign it to the text property of the label, not the label itself. also you need to call the method on self.quotes, not just quotes:

self.quoteLabel.text = [self.quotes objectAtIndex:1];
