what does $(this) refer too?

in this video as he is coding he does not explian what $(this) refers too. does if refer to var $anchor or $("#menu a")?

In the video $this refers to $("#menu a").

$this refers to the current selected element.

Here is an example;

HTML:

<button>Click me</button>

jQuery:

$(document).ready(function(){
    $("button").click(function(){
        $(this).hide();
    });
});

In the example "button" will be hidden on clicking the button as $this refers to button as it is the selected element in the example.
