What is Drupal?

I am doing the Treehouse front end development track. Finding it very interesting but am struggling to relate it to my workplace's own website, which is built on Drupal. What actually is Drupal? How does it relate to the three layers of HTML, CSS and Javascript? Tried Googling it but still don't understand how it fits together. Thanks.
