What is the advantage of programming the background image in iOS?

I now understand how to program a background image, instead of just setting it in the interface builder.

However, I do not quite understand the advantage of it... Will it be easier for animations later or have other benefits, or did you show it simply to us for us to better understand how the view hierarchy works?
