What is the purpose of all the elements tag?

There are so many element tags here: article, figure, section...

Is there a reason why I should use these tag as oppose to using div with a custom class and self defined CSS?

Does it help in search engine by using these native elements?

They are called "semantic" elements and are VERY important for the browser (and search engines) to better understand your code. Visually for the viewer they are not important, but you better use them if you want to have a seach engine optimized code....
